Woo-hoo! Got it today. I just finished watching the film about an hour
ago. I had no idea it was so funny. (Dark comedy--I dig that.) All of
the characters were just so well drawn that I forgot it was a "Mira film."
I especially loved the Yugoslavian grandmother and grandfather. To me,
they stole the show.
Now, for Mira's performance. Um, guys, if you're expecting Delenn...
don't. Javonka (sp?) is...well, interesting. Her wardrobe alone could
fill an entire post. I have to admit, when I first saw Mira's picture in
costume on the cover, I was doubtful. But those outrageous dresses and
hairdo's definitely fit the character. Without going too deeply into it
(don't want to spoiler the film for those who want to buy it), Mira's
character is basically tracking a ticket out of the Old Country. Her
weapon? Short frilly dresses and home cooking. The cooking segments are
a scream ('a cabbage roll must be no more than two inches long, and no
more than one inch wide.' -- sample of Javonka-style seduction, complete
with ruler!).
The format of the film is kind of jarring at first. (Especially when you
see clips from the sort of videocassette the message was taped on!)
But once you get into it, it works. The finale was a little wierd with
Sima the Postman. Sorry, I didn't get it. But overall, the storytelling
was effective and the concept a lot of fun.
Folks, I'm telling you. Even if Mira was not in this film, I'd recommend
it. If you like dark comedy, and you like foreign films, FIND IT. Watch
it. Dear Video is a keeper.
