Review
by Moyra J. Bligh originally written for the "John
& Delenn Site"
A delicious little black comedy with an interesting concept, skillfully
directed by Mira's husband Goran Gajic. This is one of my two most
favorite of Mira's films, and the reason I became a fan of Goran's
as well. Notable also as it is the last project the Gajic's did before
leaving the former Yugoslavia. If you think about what was going on
in their lives at the time, it will break your heart.
Chronicling the videotaped correspondence between two parts of the
same family, those remaining in rural Yugoslavia and the brother and
his family who have relocated to Germany, this film is an interesting
window on the events and conflicts affecting the two branches of the
family as war comes to the Balkans. The war is not really ever directly
mentioned in the film but is cunningly woven in with the theme of
"brother fighting brother," that goes on on many levels.
Mira plays "Jovanka" the daughter of the brother who remained on
the family farm. Now of marriageable age and not happy with her childhood
sweetheart's decision to stay on the land she's looking for a way
out. The video courtship that ensues between her and her uncle's German
next door neighbor is only part of the story.
If you feel cheated by the fact that you never got to see "Delenn"
and "John's" marriage ceremony, this is your chance to see Mira looking
absolutely beautiful in a traditional white wedding gown.
