"Strange Links Between Strange Things"
An Interview with Goran Gajic, for The Mira Furlan Fan Club
- Was "Songs from Movies that Have Never Been Made" the first musical
project you and Mira had worked on?
- No, Mira sings on two sound tracks of mine, Dear Video and back vocals
on "The Fall of Rock and Roll", which is a three part movie in which I
directed the last part, and others directed the first two, and the
entire movie has something that connects all the parts to make it one
story. It was pretty popular and successful at the box office in
Yugoslavia in 1989.
- Was this your first CD-ROM?
- Actually, no. I once did a segment for a big Japanese bank which was
more of an industrial project. This was my first CD-ROM concept-wise.
My friends in London and I designed it. Well, they actually designed
most of it, and I learned how to help them! They are good friends of
mine, Branko Vukojevic, and Vuca Popovic.
Working on the CD-ROM was a completely new area for me; I had never done
one from the very beginning. It was fun, and I think that experience
fits the concept of the whole album, which is made of little pictures
and little ideas; strange links between strange things. To record it in
that manner was very appropriate.
- There seems to be a lot of "inside humor" in the booklet enclosed with
the CD.
- Oh, yes! We poke fun at things from our past, our future and today. It
also has references to Hollywood and the Hollywood way of thinking and
making movies, as well as our past and our way of dealing with those
things.
- Do you have a favorite image from the CD-ROM?
- My favorite segment is "Traveling".
- Are those Mira's feet?
- No, they are mine! The idea for the whole segment started with a photo
I took sitting on the edge of the Grand Canyon. Looking at my feet over
the Canyon, sort of put it in perspective. There is the measurement you
know, which is your feet, and it's displayed against the whole Grand
Canyon. Comparing them was the idea that brought about that whole
dream-like sequence in "Traveling".
- Do you have plans to do another CD?
- Maybe...we have a lot of friends who are musicians, and are connected to
rock n' roll in general terms. This was never meant to be a commercial
success, or to be on the Billboard Top Ten. It was more of an
interesting artistic project that kept us busy for a little while.
- It only kept you busy for a little while?
- Well, it was a technologically involved project. It was challenging to
combine computer language with audio. Surprisingly, the technological
part was produced without any real challenges. Problems started showing
up with the 19th century technology of printing the cover!
